Invisalign vs Metal Braces
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is the market-leading clear brace, celebrated by patients and the industry alike as a giant leap forward in smile-correction treatments. Clear braces are more convenient than metal braces. Metal braces still have their place, especially for more complicated solutions – if in doubt, consult your dentist.
Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable trays, which re-align your teeth over time. You’ll even see 3D images which predict and track results.
What do clear braces look like?
Traditional wire and bracket braces are visible, which can make some patients feel self-conscious, but the appearance of Invisalign is discreet. The clear trays can’t be seen from a short distance, and even if face to face, you’d have to look closely to spot them – a feature appreciated by teenagers and young adults.
Will clear braces limit what I eat?
Metal braces are notorious for getting food debris caught in the wires, but Invisalign trays are removable. You can take your clear aligners out before eating and tuck into your favourite foods without a second thought.
Are Invisalign trays easy to clean?
Unlike metal braces, which tend to get debris caught in the wires, clear braces are easy to clean. We recommend having a dedicated soft toothbrush you only use on your trays, and gently brushing them clean, before rinsing them in the special solution they came with. Invisalign trays should be rinsed whenever you remove them, to keep them clean and fresh.
Is Invisalign safer than a metal brace?
The wire in a fixed brace can become sharp and protruding, if damaged, resulting in scrapes, or injuries during a game of sport. Clear braces are smooth and custom-designed to fit your teeth. If you’re going to play sports, just remove them before the game begins, and store them in the Invisalign case.
Will using a clear brace mean more time at the dentist?
Invisalign trays are so effective that for some, the desired results are achieved in as little as 7 weeks. Even if you wear them for longer, they only need checking after about six weeks of wear. Metal braces can require more frequent and intensive maintenance, especially if they get damaged.
